This terrestrial globe is presented in a four legged stand similar in design to that of the 18th century original. A wooden meridian ring is supported on a turned oak spindle and sits within a horizon ring. A Celestial map is applied to the horizon ring depicting the signs of the zodiac. A brass hour ring sits within the meridian ring. The map and horizon ring have been hand coloured and the stand finished in an off white chalk paint.
Cassini was regarded as one of the last great Italian globemakers of the 18th century. He was a prominent geographer and cartographer but it was his skill as an engraver that set him apart, producing some of the finest and most elaborate cartouches of the time. This globe was published with information gained from the returning Capt. Cook in 1790
The globe stands at 52cm
