Giovanni Maria Cassini
13 inch hand coloured celestial globe
This celestial globe is presented in a four legged stand similar in design to that of the 18th century original. A wooden meridian ring is supported on a turned oak spindle and sits within a horizon ring. A celestial map is applied to the horizon ring depicting the signs of the zodiac. A brass hour ring sits within the meridian ring. The map and horizon ring have been hand coloured and the stand is lightly distressed.
Cassini was regarded as one of the last great Italian globemakers of the 18th century. He was a prominent geographer and cartographer but it was his skill as an engraver that set him apart, producing some of the finest and most elaborate cartouches of the time.
This celestial globe was based upon the astronomical observations of Flamsteed and Lacaille, and depict all known constellations of the time.
The globe stands at 52cm
